Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 20, Apple will release macOS Sierra, their latest and greatest operating system for Mac computers. We know you’re probably excited about updating, but… Maybe first, you should check and see if your Mac can handle the new OS.
Getting ready to Install 1 Check your PC's details. Your Windows PC must have an Intel processor keeping in mind the end goal to run MacOS Sierra, and also at least two gigabytes of RAM. To check these specs: Open Start Image titled Windowsstart.p.
- This year’s update to the Mac operating system, macOS Sierra, marks the thirteenth iteration of Apple’s Unix-based desktop OS.It offers something for every user: refined and enhanced.
- Aug 03, 2016 Many Mac users have multiple user accounts on their computer, some of which may be created for other people to use, perhaps a separate work account, or a guest account, and so on. Typically when you create a new user account on the Mac it is a “Standard” account, which gives that user access to their files and the ability to open.
- If you want to upgrade to Sierra, you can upgrade from OS X 10.7 Lion or later. Note: When you purchase something after clicking links in our articles, we may earn a small commission.
- Macs That Can’t Run Sierra or El Capitan. If your Mac isn’t new enough to run Sierra or even El Capitan, then, unfortunately, it will no longer receive much support from Apple. Sadly, Apple doesn’t give users any direct warning when their operating system or Mac is no longer supported.
Is My Mac Compatible?
If you own a Mac computer introduced in late 2009 or later, it can be upgraded to macOS Sierra.
If you have any of the following Macs, you can install macOS Sierra:
- MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
- MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
- MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
- Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
- iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
- Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
Anything older than the Macs listed above, and you max out at Mac OS X El Capitan, or an earlier version of OS X. But, don’t freak out, El Capitan is still a great operating system, and does some pretty cool things, Plus, Apple will be supporting El Cap for the foreseeable future with updates and security fixes.
Will my Mac Support All of the New Features?
In order to support ALL of the cool new features in macOS Sierra, such as: Handoff, Auto Unlock, Siri, Apple Pay on the Web, Continuity features, and more, your Mac will have to be a 2012 or newer model. (And you’ll also need an Apple Watch running watchOS 3, if you want to make use of Apple Pay on the web, or Auto Unlock.)
The following model Macs will support all of the above features:
- MacBook (Early 2015 or newer)
- MacBook Pro (2012 or newer)
- MacBook Air (2012 or newer)
- Mac mini (2012 or newer)
- iMac (2012 or newer)
- Mac Pro (Late 2013)
Halftime vst reddit. Note: For some of the Continuity features, and Apple Pay; you’ll also need an iPhone 6 or newer, running iOS 10.
System Requirements for macOS Sierra:
- A Mac running OS X 10.7.5 or later
- At least 2GB of RAM. (The more the merrier!)
- 8.8GB of available hard drive space. (More, if possible.)
- An Apple ID to use iTunes, iCloud, and the Mac App Store
Above, we’ve listed all of the requirements for macOS Sierra, and its new features. It’s up to you to decide if moving to Sierra is worth it. Older Macs won’t get access to any of the Continuity features, or Apple Pay on the web, and a number of other features. It might make sense to just wait until Apple finally updates their Mac lineup and buy a new Mac.
We have already updated our 2015 MacBook Pro with Retina display, and we absolutely love Sierra. However, on our 2011 MBPro we decided to stick with El Capitan for now. It’s nice to have options.

What's new in macOS Sierra?
Although the overall interface is similar to previous versions of OS X, there are some significant changes:
- Siri is available in macOS Sierra. This digital personal assistant software has been available on the iPhone and iPad for years, and now it will also be available on desktop and laptop computers. It also has some new features that are more tailored to computers. For example, you can use it to search for files on your computer.
- Your Desktop and Documents folder can now automatically sync with iCloud Drive. If you have an iPhone or iPad, this makes it easier to access your files when you're away from your computer.
- The Photos app has various improvements. The new Memories feature can automatically create slideshows of related photos, such as photos taken at a specific location.
- Tabs are now available in many different apps—not just web browsers. If you do a lot of multi-tasking with multiple windows, this feature could be very useful.
- Apple Pay can be used to make purchases online. Note: To use this feature, you may need to have an iPhone or iPad with Touch ID because these devices are used to authenticate your payments (as shown below). Touch ID is available with the iPhone 5s, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3, iPad Pro, and other newer devices.
Will my apps still be there after I upgrade?
Any apps you previously had installed on your computer will still be there once you upgrade. Some Apple apps will be updated automatically when you upgrade.
